
Yogasans: For the Mind, through the Body - Thu 17 Apr 2025
Please note that we will not be doing any asan. We will understand the subtle and interesting concept of practicing the Asans with awareness, that helps us flow into meditation through the Asan, effortlessly. We will experience the teachings through the concepts, and gentle energization. The teachings can be applied to the practice of any Asan.
When one talks of Yogasans, the image that conjures up is that of physical fitness and therapy. But that is not what Yog is all about. I say “Yog for the Mind, through the Body”. Maharshi Patanjali defines the asans as स्थिर सुखम् आसनम् (sthira sukham āsanam) and प्रयत्न शैथिल्यानन्त समापत्तिभ्याम् ( prayatna śaithilyānanta samāpattibhyām ).
To put these in very simple terms, one should evolve to Meditate in the Asans, to gradually realize अनंत, one's infinitude.
Yog is much deeper than we know of it. Practicing Yogasans with mindful awareness elevates the experience to a higher dimension. Not only does this have a deeper impact on the body, it also brings about stillness in the mind. We will analyze the philosophy and the teachings of Patanjali Yog Sutras, and apply their practical concepts and the principles to understand the mindful practice of the Asans. We will also experience as to how this approach elevates us to the meditative state, effortlessly.
